Our Popcorn Ceiling Removal Process
Popcorn removal is messy if done incorrectly — but we’ve perfected a careful, organized system to keep your home clean.
1. Full Protection & Site Preparation
We protect every surface, including: Floors, Walls, Furniture, Fixtures, Vents, & returns. We seal rooms with plastic to prevent dust from traveling.
2. Safe Removal of Popcorn Texture Depending on your ceiling, we either:
Scrape off the popcorn after wetting, which will allow the texture to come off more easily and reduce dust. Skim Coat over to make the ceiling smooth. If doing multiple ceilings, sometimes we will over overlay or laminate layer of new drywall over the old texture. This is the only option with ceilings older than 1978.
Each ceiling is different — we choose the safest and cleanest method.
3. Repair the Ceiling Surface Once the popcorn is gone, we:
Fix any cracks that were hidden by the texture. Repair any tape that is popping or has air pockets underneath. Patch holes and check the screws, and rescrew the boards securely as needed. Any loose drywall is secured. Smooth uneven areas with joint compound.
Skim coat the entire ceiling if necessary.
This step is what creates that flawless, modern final look.
4. Sand, Smooth & remove any imperfections
We sand the ceiling with our drywall sanding machine attached to a special vacuum. Sanding the board clean until the entire ceiling is flat, clean, and uniform.
5. Prime & Paint (Optional)
We can prime and paint:
Just the ceiling, or the whole room. Smooth white ceilings immediately brighten the space.
